Visual Engines partner of INERA in the “Green For Fashion” research project (September 2018)

The “Green For Fashion” (G4F) project has as its leader Graziella & Braccialini, a well-known luxury leather goods brand, and wants to implement a green supply chain for eco-compatible leather bags; made with production methods with low environmental impact both for the use of materials and for the sustainable treatments of leather and metal finishes.

In this project, INERA deals with the development of a software for the automatic selection of leathers. This activity is supported by the Experimental Station for the Leather Industry and Tanning Materials (SSIP) of Santa Croce sull’Arno and Visual Engines.

Visual Engines, using the evolution of deep learning technologies, will develop, with its partner INERA, a visual analysis system of tanned materials for leather selection.

The heart of the leather recognition system consists of the appropriately trained neural network and therefore the Deep Learning system that allows its management and training. The neural network will be installed on a prototype camera developed “ad hoc”.

Visual Engines will attend as exhibitor “SMAU Milano, Ottobre 22-24 2015″, the Milan stage of the SMAU Road Show 2015. At our stand “Pad. 1 – Stand F74” we met many interested or simply curious people.

We will exhibit our visual analysis products VeMIR and VePAIR through demonstrations and our experts directly answering to questions.

We’ll also present two new app Fashion+ and City Treasures and during the Milan event we are going to playing to demo visual treasure hunt with a lots of awards.

The paper version of Il Tirreno comes alive. The editor of “Il Tirreno” newspaper Roberto Bernabo and the director of the Pisa branch of CNR (National Research Council) Domenico Laforenza, officially presented the mobile application “IL TIRRENO SOCIAL” based on the image recognition framework and products from Visual Engines (VeMIR).

Tirreno Social is an innovative application of image recognition and mobile technologies targeted to printed newspapers. Visual Engines has made available the framework VeMIR to build an iOS and Android App empowering printed newspaper readers by augmenting the newspaper with digital assets such as online articles updates, videos and discussions on social networks.The partner in this experience is Il Tirreno, an Italian regional newspaper featuring sixteen local editions around Tuscany. It was founded in 1877 under the name Il Telegrafo it is currently part of the Gruppo Editoriale L’Espresso.

The “Tirreno Social” App is freely available on Apple Store and Google Play. Once downloaded and installed on your mobile device it is immediately ready for use. You only need a printed copy of the “Il Tirreno” to scan it and enjoy. To try the app, if you do not live in Tuscany and do not have a printed copy of the newspaper at hand, we suggest you to open the daily front page image of the “Il Tirreno” on your computer and use your phone to scan the image on the screen.

Newspaper pages images loaded on the VeMIR Recognizer Repository

BEHIND THE SCENE

The VeMIR recognizer need to be instructed to recognize the newspaper pages. Every morning the newspaper editors prepare an archive file with the images of the pages and the reference to linked digital assets. The archive is loaded on the VeMIR repository and properly processed.

TIRRENO SOCIAL APP STARTS

When the user launches the Tirreno Social app it immediately checks if it is updated and, if necessary, download the daily data from the server.

Mobile device is ready to scan the newspaper

When the device is ready, tapping the “Scan” button will open the video cam and start the scanning process. The app would take fraction of seconds to get an image, check if it knows it (it tries 6 times for each image). If the image is recognized, it jump to the digital asset linked to the recognized part of the newspaper page, otherwise it restart the process.

When the app recognizes the newspaper page we are looking at, it immediately stop scanning and load the associated digital content.

AnsaPhoto

Visual Engines realized the image similarity search engine, for the AnsaPhoto portal of ANSA the most important news agency in Italy. The image search engine is based on VPAIR and allows users to retrieve images that are similar to or contain similar subjects than another image used as query.
The image similarity search engine every day indexes and make searchable more than one thousand new images, that are added to the more than 4 million already indexed.

Newspaper Social

“Newspaper Social” is a mobile app based on VeMIR that integrates seamlessly the printed, on-line, and social version of newspapers.

Users can point to a page or picture of the printed version of the newspaper and, upon recognition of the visualized part, they can access additional on-line resources related to the news.

For instance, by simply pointing a printed page, users can get on-line updates, access multimedia resources, see and post comments related to the news of interest.

This application has been realized in collaboration with ISTI and IIT institutes of CNR, and a trial is currently being carried out with the “Il Tirreno” newspaper, belonging to the “Gruppo Editoriale l’Espresso”.
